Gibbs Group, Inc. was selected as an industry partner by the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), to aide a research project sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Research Center. The research was conducted due to the problems identified by the FDOT with its roadway concrete pavements being of high strength mixtures lacking sufficient flexibility, along with, induced expansion and contraction in the pavement due to temperature changes. To address these concerns, it was suggested to replace some of the fine or coarse aggregate component with crumb rubber, providing some flexibility in the concrete pavement. The research was completed in mid 2015. The results are being reviewed and considered for use be the Department in future concrete pavement projects.
